This week-end is time for fun and frolic. My friends, Shirl and Tina and I are hitting the road………….
We have our bags packed………………….
Just a few necessities…………..
We’re planning for this……
and a little of this……..OK…..more than a little……BUT, in better places, too……….
and we are going prepared in case some of this comes along…..I’m just saying…..
Now I don’t like to brag, but Tina and Shirl and myself were inducted into The Super,Smart,Savvy Shopper Club quite a few years ago. So, we know how to do it. And, we plan to put our talents to work. No. No you can’t…you could never keep up. Heck!!! sometimes I can’t keep up. So, I sit and rest a spell, and they oh, so kindly come back by to retrieve me.
However, if it gets to be too much we have a plan…….
OR…..
The only problem we will have is finding restrooms for Shirl. She drinks coffee all day and it has to be recycled. But there are never enough womens rest rooms. So…this idea is for her!
Clever, huh? (this is not my original idea)
Must rest now……big days a head! I’ll see you on Sunday…unless I try to blog at night…which I’m thinking looks pretty doubtful…….
Summer. Where did it go? It just got started and now…it’s over. Well, over in spirit…here in my town, we could very well be wearing shorts and going barefoot on Christmas Day! But, summer. Those ‘Lazy, Hazy’ days are over. I feel as if it sort of passed me by this year. Sort of a strange feeling, but I kept thinking I was going to get into the summer mood. Now, the chance for that is gone, and I’m looking to find the Autumn Feeling. And, I’m gonna get it…even if I have to go out and roll around in the leaves…not now…when they fall…and turn colors. No. No, you can NOT watch!
What does that word ‘Autumn‘ say to you. OK, I’m going to try an ABC list…
P…peanuts*****Q…sQuash*****R…red*****S…squirrel*****T…turkey*****U…under (the harvest moon)*****
V… vines*****W…wheelbarrow*****X…eXcitement*****Y…yams*****Z…Zip (up your jacket to stay warm)
That was not as easy as I thought it would be! I had to really think about some of these. So here’s a challenge…can you think of a word for each letter of the alphabet…..that is DIFFERENT than the one I chose? I kinda ‘fudged’ on some of mine…you can surely do better! Come on, now…let’s play a little. I’m not going to do the ‘tagging’ thing…just write a ‘ Welcome to Autumn’ post on your blog and include the letters and words! Be a sport…play along! And, you friends without a blog…just put your answers in the comments! See? Easy Peasy! Now, go! I’m waiting to hear from YOU!
“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22
Yes, yes, yes…I’m moving on up in years. But, I really don’t mind, I have only 1 other choice…and I’m not ready for that…well, I’m ready…just not homesick!
Anyway. A few years ago, in some reading, some where…I read this story about Julie Andrews.
To commemorate her birthday, actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special
appearance at Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.
One of the musical numbers she performed was ‘My Favorite Things’ from the legendary movie
‘Sound Of Music’. Here are the lyrics she used:
(Sing It!) – If you sing it, its especially hysterical!!!
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts ,and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don’t feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin’,
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’,
And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I’ve had,
And then I don’t feel so bad. (Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over
four minutes and repeated encores)
Very clever, huh? Soon after that, my friend, Bonnie, and I were celebrating our birthdays, just a few days apart. This was while I was still working. And, we knew there was going to be a party. I thought that it would be fun to surprise the rest of the teachers by singing this to them after they sang Happy Birthday to us. But, the more I looked at the verses, the more I realized that it was written for folks way older than us…and it would never do. So, I began working on my own version. Bonnie and I talked back and forth, and finally we had it right. Now the verses fit these ‘middle ages’ much better. We did indeed surprise the rest of the teachers…and they loved it! We did NOT, however, receive a 4 minute standing ovation! 🙂
So, here is our version…and remember…it’s funnier if you sing it!
MY FAVORITE THINGS
REVISED for the 50-something crowd…by Tonja Owens
—————————————————-
Maalox and eye drops and clothes that aren’t fitting,
Holding the handrails and cushions for sitting,
Sweating profusely that hot flashes bring,
These are a few of our favorite things.
Gravity and cataracts and hearing aids and gasses,
Correctol and prilosec and bifocal glasses,
Weddings and grandkids and porches with swings,
These are a few of our favorite things.
When the ‘pipes’ leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
We simply remember our favorite things,
And then we don’t feel so bad.
Toast and hot coffee and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy dishes or food cooked with onions,
Elastic waist pants and the old songs we sing,
These are a few of our favorite things.
Back pain, confused brains, and no time for sinnin’,
Old friends and new friends and lines made from grinnin’,
Being so careful while spreading our wings,
These are just some of our favorite things.
When the joints ache,
When the hips break,
When the eyes go dim,
Then we just remember the great fun we’ve had,
And then we don’t feel so bad.
Joy and I have had a wonderful time this week-end. Just being together is a treat, but being with friends and helping make their days more special is a DOUBLE TREAT! It is Sunday morning and we have to get packed and move on back down the road to Dothan. But first, I want to show you some pics from the weekend!
THE REHEARSAL DINNER
working hard in the afternoon….
…and it was all worth it at the dinner!
WEDDING DAY…It dawned hot, hot, hot! But at least no rain! Joy and I did a few things in the morning, but came back to rest. I needed to let these tootsies rest a little because I was going to direct the wedding and I knew I would be on my feet a long time. We noticed a few clouds as we were going to the motel, but nothing major. Joy took a nap, and I tried to get my computer to work. It started raining a little…and then a little harder….and THEN thunder and lightning…BIG lightning! But, then it began slacking off. We drove to the winery in the drizzling rain, it got lighter and lighter as we got closer. As the wedding party and guests drove into winery, down a dirt road with beautiful vineyards of each side, they were met with the most beautiful rainbow. What a gift! As if God was sending and ‘extra special’ blessing on this couple.
“God has given us these times of joy.” Nehemiah 12 : 43
My friend Pamela…don’t you love her dress…Mother of the Groom…
From Dothan…Donna and John Walker…
…Monty and David Clark…
…Juliann and Tillman Black…and Ron Ellis…Father of the Groom…
…Joy and I…
…Our dear friend, and the Minister for the wedding, Rev. Billy Rich…
Beautiful grapes in the vineyard…

And…it was over……
The sun began to set…..
…And, the beautiful Birmingham scenery enthralled us as we drove back to the motel…
The newlyweds are off to Mexico, the Mother and Father of the Groom are taking a day or two to recoup, and most of the friends and family have returned home. What a joy to have been a part of the fun. The couples in the pictures I showed, including the Mom and Dad of Groom, and Joy and my families, have been friends for 35 years, at least. We have had babies together, married children together, buried family members together, some worked in jobs together, and most importantly…worshipped together. How wonderful that God allowed us to grow and share some of life’s happiness and good times, as well as sadness and burdens together. The most important quality that we have shared is our faith. We have grown our faith and taught our faith to our own and each other’s children. And, now we are reaping the rewards of seeing those children becoming responsible adults in the world and carrying on what we started. God is so good!
“We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders he has done. ..so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Psalm 78:4-6
I am a Christian woman who has survived many years on the planet. God has blessed me with a wonderful family: husband, 3 sons, a dear DIL, and a precious grandson. I also have dear friends to keep me inspired. I am an artist of sorts and am finding my way through the great blessing of retirement. I recently retired after 20 years as a music teacher. Life is good!
